Summary 
Germany's most beloved and successful children's film classic takes you into the magical settings of the Arabian Nights. Wolfgang Staudte's lavish production and special effects carried on the legacy of the Ufa studios in Babelsberg. In a small town, a hunchbacked old man is teased, taunted and chased by the local children. One day, he manages to hold them spellbound with a story - his own story: A little boy called Mook is banished from his home by evil relatives following the death of his father. In search of happiness and fortune, he goes off to live in the desert, where he meets a wondrous old woman. He becomes the owner of magic racing slippers and a wand with which to find hidden treasures. Convinced that he has found his fortune, Mook sets out to find employment at the Sultan's court. But once there, Mook's success evokes much envy among the courtiers, who involve him in intrigues and have him expelled from the palace...

The story of an apolitical working-class family that nevertheless gets drawn into collusion with Nazi policies. Rotation was awarded the Golden Leopard at the 1954 Locarno Film Festival and is ranked by film critics as one of Germany's 100 Most Important Films. Rotation portrays a German family and its support for Hitler during the Nazi period. The apolitical mechanic Hans Behnke considers joining the Nazi party to improve his financial standing. When he helps friends print resistance leaflets, however, his son, a member of the Hitler Youth, betrays him and he gets sent to prison. After the war, father and son meet again. Another classic film by Wolfgang Staudte (The murderers are among us), it explores the individual's struggle within a murderous dictatorship. It was censored by Soviet authorities in East Germany because of its pacifist message and the inclusion of footage from Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia (1936).

In Mann's biting critique of conservative Wilhelmine Germany, written during WWI, Diederich Hessling learns an important lesson for an ambitious man: one must first serve power to gain power for oneself. From then on, his modus operandi is to bow to superiors and kick underlings.
