Summary

Summary

Handsome color illustrations of paintings and sculptures as well as useful wares such as trade signs, weather vanes and pottery, and nonutilitarian ones like toys and whirligigs are accompanied by a substantial text which places folk art in its social and historical context. Booklist Review

Rumford and Weekley mount 182 sharply focused, convincingly hued colorplates depicting the riches of one of the largest collections of American folk art in this fiftieth anniversary commemorative album. The plates are sorted by subject matter into eight chapters, with indicative titles such as "The Folk" (portraiture), "Down by the Shore" (seascapes and ships), "Home Sweet Home" (domestic articles and scenes), "A Virtuous Life . . ." (religious and moralistic imagery), etc. The text is lightweight, devoted primarily to what is known about the artworks' creators and their motives. A lovely, popularly oriented display of prime Americana. Bibliography; index. --Ray Olson
