Summary
Fearless examines the experiences of four women fighting for social justice. Each has her own fascinating story to tell, but all are united by their determination to stand up for what they believe. They are fighting for recognition of human rights in their countries - the Philippines, Bangladesh, India and Australia - and across the globe. The forces they are up against are imposing - religious fundamentalism, institutionalised discrimination, authoritarian control and economic exploitation - yet these courageous and committed women are prepared to risk everything. Above all, they refuse to be silent and accepting. They are passionate about the basic human right to speak one's mind without fear of repercussions and have willingly shouldered enormous responsibilities to give voice to those people who have none. This compelling series examines the issues that incite them to action, their personal motivations and their hopes for the future. Summary
This is a story of personal tragedy, political rivalries, corruption and trial by media that nearly tore apart Australia at the moment of its birth. In the late 1800s, two men shared a vision for opening up Western Australia by pumping a river of water through pipes across the desert. Isolated goldfields were ripe with precious metal, but the people were dying of thirst. The state's first Premier and leading explorer, John Forrest, had a vision to take water to the goldfields. In Charles Yelverton O'Connor, he found the man he needed to turn his dreams into reality. At the time, the biggest and most ambitious engineering project of its kind in the world would save thousands from disease and drought, unlock untold riches in gold, and allow the 'Cinderella' state of Western Australia to take her rightful place in Australia's Commonwealth. But the five long years of the pipeline's construction would be dogged with controversy, destroy reputations and push an individual to breaking point. As Australia voted for Federation, becoming the new Australian Commonwealth, the dream of water in the goldfields finally became a reality, but it was at a huge personal cost. Summary
In 1975, after 460 years of Portuguese rule, Fretilin, the revolutionary front for an independent East Timor, declared independence for the small nation. Ten days later Indonesia invaded. Fretilin, and the resistance army Falintil, fought the Indonesian military for the next 24 years. A third of the population - over 250,000 people - died as a result of the occupation. In 1999, Indonesia agreed to a United Nations supervised referendum and the people of East Timor voted overwhelmingly for independence. The Indonesian army and the local militia it had created withdrew, burning, looting and killing, razing the country to the ground. East Timor: Birth of a Nation looks at how a country is born, literally from the ashes, and how the East Timorese people are now working to build a future. Each program in this two-part series tells the powerful personal story of a remarkably resilient individual. In examining their experiences, the series explores the complex issues and difficult decisions that are involved in reconciling the past and creating a truly independent nation.
