Summary
A visually sumptuous adaptation of Sándor Petőfi's famed 1845 poem, and the first-ever feature length animated film produced in Hungary, János Vitéz recounts the exploits of strapping young solider JOHNNY CORNCOB and his mythic quest to be reunited with Iluska, the great love of his life. Directed by legendary Hungarian animator Marcell Jankovics' (Son of the White Mare, Sisyphus, The Struggle), János Vitéz's is the product of 22 months work from 130 members of Hungary's famed Pannonia Film Studio. A marvel of analog animation deeply inspired by George Dunning's Yellow Submarine, János Vitéz is both a grand adventure and a significant piece of film history.
Summary
This stark, stunning debut feature is loosely based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name, and stars Björk in her first on-screen performance. Set in medieval Iceland, THE JUNIPER TREE follows Margit (BjörK) and her older sister Katla as they flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding shelter and protection with Johan, and his resentful young son, Jonas, the sisters help form an impromptu family unit that's soon strained by Katla's burgeoning sorcery. Nominated for the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the **Sundance Film Festival.** "*Distinctive, ambitious, and genuinely poetic.*" - ***The Los Angeles Times***
Summary
Former performance artist Josephine Decker's stunning debut feature is a deeply subjective, mysterious and erotic portrait of a frantic young woman, Sarah who leaves the city for a Balkan music camp hidden deep in the California woods. Once there she reconnects with a former friend, Isolde and does some hilariously foul-mouthed female bonding - until she finds herself growing attracted to a hunky male camper, Steph. Gradually her already-frayed grip on reality starts to unravel, as cinematographer Ashley Connor's superb, disorienting camerawork and the swirling Balkan music become darker and more disorienting. Her personality finally shatters in a moment of transcendent violence that causes us to question whether we too have become lost in the deep, impenetrable forest of fear and desire. *"Elegant and elliptical, Josephine Decker's psychodrama is a blurring of the line between waking and dream states." - Michael Nordine, **Village Voice***
