Author Notes

Robert Fulghum was born in Waco, Tex. in 1937. He attended the University of Colorado and obtained a degree in history and philosophy from Baylor University. He also spent some time at a Zen Buddhist monastery in Japan.

Fulghum's ideas about how to make life better and appreciate its simple joys inspired him to write the bestselling All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Several other successful books authored by Fulghum have followed, such as It Was On Fire When I Lay Down On It, Maybe (Maybe Not), Uh-Oh: Some Observations From Both Sides of the Refrigerator Door, From Beginning to End, True Love, What On Earth Have I Done?, and Third Wish.

To explore the topic of love, Fulghum (From Beginning to End) solicited personal stories from "hundreds and hundreds" of people of all ages and walks of life. The stories assembled here can be touching, even compelling. One tells of the old man who paints his wife's toenails after she is too old to bend down easily to do it herself because, he says, "I love you and I want you to feel beautiful as long as you live"; one speaks of the young man who learns about women and love from the retired college professor who tutors him on the works of D.H. Lawrence; another celebrates the couple with two children who have stayed together through 12 years of alcoholism and 15 years of recovery. Other stories describe pleasant first meetings or reunions, and still others detail fleeting encounters that never blossom into a relationship at all. Some of this seems more about ego or fantasy than love; as one wise teenager states, "Love is 3/4 dream and 1/4 reality." Fulghum punctuates the stories with the down-to-earth wisdom his readers have come to expect from him and donates his own true-love memory as well-of falling in love 40 years ago while working as a cowboy in Colorado. "With the excuse of doing research for this book," he confesses, "I hired a private detective to find my long-lost love." The sleuth found the woman "in four hours," and Fulghum wrote to her. Just in time for Valentine's Day comes the perennially best-selling Fulghum's latest on love. In Uh-Oh (1991), he shared love stories from his own life. Now, per his request, readers have sent him their own brushes with love, and to gather more fodder, he sat in Seattle coffee shops with a sign that said, "Tell me a short love story, and I will buy you coffee and make you famous." Sounds like a pretty easy way to "write" a book, but Fulghum does provide commentary here and there and some of his own material, including a touching little tale about a widow in her seventies who re-meets her true love at her high-school reunion and then wanders around Victoria's Secret trying to figure out how to translate her feelings into appropriate lingerie. Some of the anecdotes are so sweet they'll make your teeth ache faster than Valentine chocolates. Librarians may want to warn readers not to gobble this down in one sitting. --Ilene Cooper
