Choice Review
There are biographies of senators who served as leaders, but First Among Equals offers in one volume profiles of nine outstanding party leaders of this century: John W. Kern (D), Henry Cabot Lodge (R), Joseph T. Robinson (D), Charles L. McNary (R), Alben W. Barkley (D), Robert A. Taft (R), Lyndon B. Johnson (D), Everett M. Dirksen (R), and Mike Mansfield (D). The book is the result of a conference on Senate leaders sponsored by the Dirksen Congressional Center. The authors are historians, political scientists, and journalists--all well qualified to write about these leaders. For the first time we can easily make comparisons between leaders through time. Differences in writing style and coverage are to be expected, but the profiles read well and clearly identify the leadership context and characteristics of each era. Contains a foreword by Howard H. Baker, Jr., himself a former floor leader; a brief introduction by the editors; and a list of Senate floor leaders from 1913 to the present. All levels of readers.
