In a postapocalyptic Boston, Eli Margolis has just arrived to start a job as a paramedic. His new partner is the gorgeous Cacy Ferry. Immediately sparks arise between the two. But tragedy strikes when she and Eli go out on an emergency call for her own father, who does not survive. Cacy's brother, Ryan, takes over as leader of the Ferry clan, whose secret task is to act as intermediaries between humans marked for death and the grim reaper-like Keres, who take the departed to the afterlife. Cacy is sure that her father was marked before his natural time, which would be a violation of the treaty between the Ferrys and the Keres. VERDICT The setting of a near-future Boston half underwater owing to climate change is an excellent backdrop to this new series that straddles the line separating paranormal romance from urban fantasy. Both the romance and the fantasy work well: the former helps the latter seem like it has higher stakes, and the fantasy gives the romance some serious obstacles to overcome. This should be a great ongoing series from an author previously known for her teen fantasy novels (Sanctum; Fractured; Chaos). (c) Copyright 2015.
